Effects of pandemic safety measures being felt as sports seasons begin

As high school sports practices start up across South Dakota, coaches, athletes and administrators are realizing that it’s not business as usual during a pandemic.

The South Dakota High School Activities Association board of directors heard reports about the start of fall sports Thursday, August. 13, at their August meeting in Pierre. The meeting was live streamed on the internet.

One safety measure in football has been particularly vexing.

COVID-19 EASTER SUNDAY EMERGENCY -- Residents in Sisseton came out of their homes on Easter Sunday afternoon, Apr. 12, 2020 wondering what the emergency was as sirens could be heard going through town. Where and what was the emergency? The need to smile and celebrate the joy of Easter apparently. Jeff Pageler, Sisseton Fire Chief and his wife Debbie had the great idea to spread some cheer in the midst of COVID-19’s social distancing. In a typical year the FAN Club and other local organizations would hold Easter Egg Hunts and Fish Frys to mark this holiday season.

#BETHELIGHTSISSETON -- A Sisseton community member and teacher had the great idea of turning on the lights at the main baseball field at the Sisseton Baseball Complex every Friday as a symbol of hope and togetherness for our community. The lights will be kept on each week for 1 minute representing each day that students have not been in school. The next “event” will be this Friday, April 24 starting at 8:20 p.m. The time was picked to show support for the graduating class of 2020. We encourage community members to drive by or pull into the parking lot to stop and take a picture.

CITY MAKES CHANGES IN LOCAL PARKS--During the special council meeting on Monday, Mar. 30 the decision was made to take down the basketball hoops and to fence off the playground equipment and gazebos in the City parks to keep people from congregating in larger groups. The Council did not want to close the parks to the public because of the walking paths that go through the parks and several city streets. People need to be able to get out and walk, but everyone needs to still be aware of maintaining a social distance. Drenttal Park is pictured above and Anderson Park is pictured below right.

50th annual car and motorcycle show has been canceled

The Lake Area Cruisers has decided to cancel the 50th Annual Sisseton Car & Motorcycle Show that was scheduled to be held on June 6, 2020. This is due to the current CDC recommendations regarding social gatherings related to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Attorney General Ravnsborg cautions against coronavirus-related scams

Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg reminds South Dakotans to be on the lookout for scam artists taking advantage of the current Coronavirus emergency to fi nd new victims.

The Division of Consumer Protection warns that other states have already seen scams using the Coronavirus, including a report of a scam involving a supposed automatic credit or bank charge for a Coronavirus test kit which can only be canceled and refunded if the unsuspecting victim will “verify” their account information and mailing address.

Labor Department accepting unemployment claims from workers affected by COVID-19

The Department of Labor and Regulation (DLR) is accepting reemployment assistance (unemployment insurance) claims from workers who are not able to work due to COVID-19. Eligibility will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is changing every hour, and we want to ensure South Dakotans have options to receive temporary fi nancial assistance if their jobs are impacted,” said Governor Kristi Noem. “I encourage employers to be fl exible and to contact my Department of Labor with any questions at DLRRADivision@ state.sd.us.”

Employers: Use SIDES for online unemployment filing

The Department of Labor and Regulation (DLR) is asking employers fi ling unemployment insurance information to sign up for the State Information Data Exchange System (SIDES) e-Response.

SIDES e-Response is a fast, secure and standardized way to automate responses to notices of unemployment claims. Once an employer signs on to SIDES e-Response, DLR will deliver all notices to their email address rather than by mail.
