By Governor Kristi Noem With the COVID-19 situation continuing to be very fl uid in South Dakota, it is important that we all remain diligent and wise in the coming days. Common sense steps – that we all can take – should help us manage the virus’ spread. Epidemiologists refer to this as “fl attening the curve.” What that means is with social distancing (avoiding large gatherings) we should be able to slow the spread of the virus and avoid a spike in the number of people getting sick. If that happens, we should be able to avoid overwhelming the hospital systems, which is a top priority.

Care Facilities invoking measures to protect residents from COVID-19

Care facilities in the local area are responding to the threat of the novel coronavirus by invoking protective measures for residents.

Tekakwitha Living Center in Sisseton is currently on lockdown. A TLC Facebook post on Thursday, Mar. 12, stated that effective on that date, the facility was on lockdown to protect residents from the coronavirus and that only staff will be allowed into the building.

CDP Healthcare System Response to Concerns about Novel Coronavirus

In response to the Novel Coronavirus, which causes the disease known as COVID-19, trust that we at CDP Health Care System are working closely with the South Dakota Department of Health to take steps to prevent the virus and protect our employees, patients and visitors. This includes personal protective equipment (PPE) for staff and isolation of patients when COVID-19 is suspected.

ST. PETER'S CHURCH 525 East Chestnut St., Sisseton.   Sundays and weekday Masses Public Masses suspended for the coronavirus fight. Call for more information at 605-698-7414.  Confessions Thursdays 6:00-6:30 p.m. Saturdays 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Adoration First Thursday of the Month Church is open for private prayer during business hours.

So are we overreacting to the Coronavirus?

If this virus is so much less deadly and pervasive than the seasonal flu, why so much hype about it? Why are public health agencies in full mobilization mode? Why are people being quarantined? Why has the reaction been so over-the-top that it is tanking the U.S. and world economies, with economists now saying there is a good chance of a recession ahead?

Grow South Dakota Office closed to public

Starting Tuesday, Mar. 17, 2020, all GROW SD offices (Sisseton, Langford, Webster, Aberdeen) will be closed to the public temporarily due to public health concerns. However, GROW SD remains operational and staff will be available by email, phone and mail. Please call to schedule an appointment, if necessary. Requests can be through telephone at (605) 698-7654 Ext 0 or email to info@growsd.org.

At the request of Governor Noem School Closure Notification Due to Governor Noem's request, the Sisseton School District will be closed next week, March 16-20, 2020. All district facilities will close for any type of public use at 7:00 p.m., and will remain closed until further notice.
