Bryan Akipa is a remarkable man. In his quiet way, he has made a loud noise for the promotion of Indigenous art throughout the state, the nation, and even the world. For his contribution as an Indigenous dancer, artist, and flute carver and player, he has received many accolades, the latest of which is his induction into the South Dakota Hall of Fame.

Akipa, a member of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate, is one of ten people “whose life works have helped shape excellence in South Dakota and our nation.” They were honored at a ceremony on Sept.13 and 14, 2024, in Chamberlain/Oacoma for their achievements in the category either of arts and entertainment, professional, general, agriculture, education, or business.
