If a $25 million grant request is authorized by the federal government, the Sisseton Milbank Railroad (SMRR) will receive enough funds to completely modernize the 37 miles of rail track that runs between Milbank and Sisseton. The rail line’s modernization is as important for the local economies of Sisseton, Peever, Wilmot, and Corona as the line’s original construction was for their founding.

For instance, a rail line that can handle normal rail speeds and high-capacity railcars would be incentive enough for Wheaton-Dumont Coop Elevator to consider building a new grain handling facility just south of Sisseton. The company has already purchased the land, and CEO Philip Deal has written a letter of support for the grant stating this intent, contingent upon the grant’s approval.
