Prendergast tapped as English Teacher of the Year

by Mimi Larsen Courier Staff Writer

Sharon Prendergast of Sisseton was recently honored as the 2022 English Teacher of the Year by her peers at the South Dakota Council of Teachers of English (SDCTE) at their annual convention in Chamberlain. Sharon teaches senior English and freshman speech at Sisseton High School, and was nominated by her SHS colleague Janelle Bakke, as well as by her former student Kama Konda-Varilek, both members of SDCTE.

“Because I knew you, I have been changed for good.” Kama quoted this line from Wicked, to describe the influence Sharon had on her as a student and continues to have on her as a friend and colleague. This could be said by countless students, friends and colleagues who have fallen under Sharon’s shadow.
