Aberdeen Central High School’s Speech and Debate team won the 2024 SDHSAA Class AA Debate & Individual Events State Competition held in Watertown Mar. 1-2 for the eighth consecutive year. This is also the 12th state championship of the 13 years Kerry Konda has been the head coach. Konda is a 2003 graduate of Sisseton High School and the son of Frank and Dinah Konda, of New Effington.

Konda traces his speech and debate experience back to his years in Oral Interp at SHS under High School English teacher Sharon Prendergast. He went on to participate on the speech and debate team at Northern State University.

“I learned a bit about extemporaneous speech and oratory [in college], but only dabbled in debate.” said Konda. “When I was student teaching at Milbank High School, I helped Doug Tschetter with their speech and debate team. They were a small team that did consistently well against the bigger schools like Aberdeen Central and Brookings.” For more on this story and many more please purchase a copy of the Sisseton Courier on news stands now or purchase a copy of the E-edtion on this website.
