The Children’s Blizzard: A Novel” by Melanie Benjamin is the South Dakota Humanities Council’s “2021 One Book South Dakota” selection. Based on oral histories of survivors of the infamous storm that struck Dakota Territory in January 1888, this novel presents an intimate account of the challenges faced by school teachers and homesteaders both during and after the blizzard.
