Konda Sees Need and Fills It While Working in Iowa Travis Konda, son of Frank and Dinah Konda of rural New Effington, saw a need in the park near his company’s bridge construction project, and decided it was something he could help fulfill. He gathered volunteers and resources from his company and other contractors to replace a dilapidated picnic shelter that can be used by many residents enjoying the outdoors, at a time when indoor activities are restricted due to COVID-19. ~ Courtesy Photo

People who visit Bettendorf’s Leach Park, IA at the base of the Interstate 74 bridge, may have noticed the construction of a new, all-in-one picnic shelter over the past couple of months.

This wouldn’t be unusual if it were a city undertaking, but it wasn’t.

Building the shelter was a gift to the city, led by Travis Konda, a Twin Cities engineer who has been in Bettendorf for 40 months -- that’s 3 1/2 years -- working on the I-74 bridge.

Konda is employed by HNTB Corp., a Kansas City-based firm that is providing construction engineering, contract administration and inspection for the Iowa Department of Transportation
